Cake That! - A Delicious Confection Filled Sit Down

We welcome Launa Barrett, owner of Cake That!. Her cake business is based in Conroe, Texas where she lives with her wonderful family! We are glad to say that all of us at Building Bridges Marketing have known her and her family for over a decade! If you ever need a cake and you're in the area....Call her up!

Building Bridges: Tell us a little bit about you, your family, and what you like to do for fun!

Launa Barrett: I have been married to Steve for 29 years, and we have six children ranging in ages from 26 to 12.  We have homeschooled our children for the past 21 years.  All of my family (except me) are gamers, so when they are busy playing on their computers, I like to watch movies, shop, or decorate cakes.

Building Bridges: What other hobbies do you have?

Launa Barrett: My other hobbies are singing, playing the piano, and sewing.

Building Bridges: Why did you decide to open your cake business?

Launa Barrett: I started decorating cakes for friends eight years ago.  When my kids would go to birthday parties, I would offer to bring the cake as a gift.  Word spread about my cakes, but at that time, it was illegal in TX to sell baked goods from your home.  So I had to wait until the “Cottage Food Law” was passed in 2011 before my hobby could become an official business.  Once I opened “Cake That!” I began taking orders and now average 4-5 orders a week.

Building Bridges: Did someone encourage you to start a business?

Launa Barrett: Not really, I just wanted to be able to sell my cakes instead of give them away as gifts.  Giving them away to friends is fine, but when people were willing to pay me for it, why not!?!?

Building Bridges: When did your cake shop officially open?

Launa Barrett: September, 2011

Building Bridges: Do you remember your first product that sold, what was it?

Launa Barrett: My first two cakes were a giant pair of flip flops, and a volleyball themed cake.

Building Bridges: Do you take custom orders?

Launa Barrett: Yes, my whole business is based on custom orders.  I love creating a person’s “dream cake,” especially at their wedding!

Building Bridges: What do you love or hate about selling?

Launa Barrett: I love to see a customer’s face when they first see their cake.  Sometimes, they start crying because they’re so happy.  It’s very rewarding!  Of course, I also enjoy making a little money on the side!  I don’t really enjoy the paperwork side of the business, and sometimes put it off for a couple of weeks!

Building Bridges: What is your favorite part about owning your own business?

Launa Barrett: I love seeing my business name out there in the public!  I love my logo, and seeing it on my business cards or flyers makes me happy!

Building Bridges: Do you have a product that you prefer to design/create over others?

Launa Barrett: I really enjoy cakes, but cupcakes are much easier!  Cookies are very time consuming, but in my opinion, they are the yummiest!

Building Bridges: Do you have any advice for other crafters who would like to start selling their creations?

Launa Barrett:  Make sure you have a quality product at a fair price.

Building Bridges: Do you have your own website or Facebook page? We would LOVE to follow you back!
Launa Barrett: Yes! Check out my website & my facebook page for my gallery of cakes that I have made.

Building Bridges: We love to attend craft and vendor markets - do you?

Launa Barrett: No.  I don’t have the time to do them right now since my family comes first and we’re still homeschooling four children.

Building Bridges: Do you ever get nervous the night before a cake is to be delivered?

Launa Barrett: Yes, I get nervous when I’m driving a large wedding cake to the venue!  I also get nervous when I’m setting it up.

Building Bridges: Did you always see yourself becoming an entrepreneur?

Launa Barrett: No, I never thought it would turn into a business!

Building Bridges: So we understand that most of your cakes are custom made, how long in advance do customers need to order?

Launa Barrett: Yes, I mostly do custom cakes and I need at least 3 weeks’ notice for most orders.

Building Bridges: What is your favorite cake you make and why?
Launa Barrett:  I love making topsy turvy cakes.  I love the look of them like they’re going to fall over!
Building Bridges: Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us for a bit, Launa! The cakes are delicious! We can definitely attest to trying a few bites…maybe a few slices. Hehe Launa can be contacted for orders through her website, Facebook page or cell # 936-718-3770.
